The Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri Trek is a 15-day journey that takes you through the captivating Gokyo lakes and Gokyo Ri, which is an extraordinary viewpoint to witness the breathtaking scenery of Mt. Everest and other Himalayan peaks. Commencing in Kathmandu, where we explore various UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this trek is an unconventional option in the Everest region. It allows you to explore the mesmerizing turquoise Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri, which offer incredible views of the Himalayan peaks. Along the way, you can also witness the colossal Ngozumpa Glacier and the picturesque Gokyo Valley from Gokyo Ri.
The Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri trek is perfect for those who prefer to trek in the Everest region without the physical strain of reaching Everest Base Camp or crossing high passes in the area. This trek is designed for travelers who desire to experience something new in the Everest region.

Itineraries
Day 1
Arrive in Kathmandu
A representative from Meta Holidays will meet you at the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu and transfer you to your designated hotel. You might rest after checking in or go to the Meta Holidays office. A welcome dinner with authentic Nepali food and a quick cultural presentation will be held in a typical Nepalese restaurant in the evening.

Day 2
Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing
After breakfast, we begin a guided tour of some of Kathmandu's most revered historical and spiritual landmarks, which are also regarded as UNESCO World Heritage sites. We go to the historic Kathmandu Durbar Square, the holy Pashupatinath Hindu temple, the well-known Swayambhunath "Monkey Temple," and the Buddhist shrine Bouddhanath, which is also one of the biggest stupas in the world. We check our gear with our trekking guide at lunchtime, meet the other participants, and talk about our trip at the Meta Holidays office.

Day 3
Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla trek to Phakding
Today, you will be flying to Lukla, the gateway to Everest adventures. You will be dropped to the domestic airport for an early flight to Lukla. The short flight presents us with attractive views of the mountain peaks. From Lukla, you will make your way to Phakding, a beautiful settlement situated at the edge of Khumbu’s Dudh Koshi River Valley. Along the way, you can catch an amazing glimpse of the Kusum Kanguru Peak and other equally petrifying mountains.
Day 4
Phakding to Namche Bazar
We take the trail north up the Benkar valley, passing by a lovely pine grove. The entrance to Everest National Park is Monjo, which we reach after crossing the Dudh Koshi River and continuing past Chumoa. Later, after passing through Jorsale hamlet and a suspension bridge, we continue to walk alongside the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers. We ascend steeply to reach Namche Bazaar, the principal hub of the Sherpa culture. If the weather is favorable, we can see Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse before arriving at Namche Bazaar.
Day 5
Namche Bazaar to Phortse Thenga
Begin your trek early, leaving the bustling Namche Bazaar and heading towards Phortse Thenga. The trail takes you through pine forests with occasional clearings that offer breathtaking views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. Cross several suspension bridges and pass traditional Sherpa villages, where locals offer warm hospitality. Upon arrival at Phortse Thenga, settle into a teahouse and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this serene hamlet tucked amid towering peaks.
Day 6
Phortse Thenga to Dole
Embark on a gradual ascent, leaving the Dudh Koshi River valley behind. The trail weaves through dense rhododendron and juniper forests, home to Himalayan wildlife like musk deer and colorful pheasants. As you approach Dole, panoramic views of Cho Oyu, Thamserku, and other peaks unfold, rewarding your efforts. Spend the evening relaxing in Dole, where the air is fresh and the atmosphere tranquil.
Day 7
Dole to Machhermo
Today’s trek is relatively short but offers stunning scenery. Walk through rugged terrain, following a trail that hugs high ridges with views of glacial streams and alpine meadows. Reach Machhermo in time for an acclimatization break. Visit the Machhermo Rescue Center for a briefing on altitude sickness prevention, gaining valuable insights for the higher elevations ahead.
Day 8
Machhermo to Gokyo
Continue ascending along the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal. As you approach Gokyo, marvel at the shimmering turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes, surrounded by towering peaks. Upon arrival at the quaint Gokyo village, take a stroll to the lake’s edge to soak in the serene beauty of this sacred site.
Day 9
Sunrise Hike to Gokyo Ri
Rise early for the challenging hike to Gokyo Ri, the trek’s highlight. The steep ascent is worth every step, as the summit rewards you with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the sprawling Ngozumpa Glacier below. After descending, spend the afternoon exploring the village or relaxing by the lakes.
Day 10
Explore 5th Gokyo Lake (Optional)
If you’re feeling adventurous, take a day hike to the 5th Gokyo Lake (Ngozumpa Tsho). The trail leads to Scoundrel’s Viewpoint, where you can admire breathtaking vistas of Cho Oyu and Everest’s north face. This optional excursion offers a deeper immersion into the Gokyo region’s pristine beauty.
Day 11
Gokyo to Phortse
Retrace your steps down the valley, passing Dole and taking a scenic alternate trail toward Phortse. The path is peaceful and less crowded, offering unique perspectives of the surrounding peaks. Phortse, known for its Sherpa culture and traditional architecture, provides a cozy stopover.
Day 12
Phortse to Namche Bazaar
Begin your descent back to Namche Bazaar, passing through Tengboche Monastery and the vibrant Khumjung village. The trail is rich with cultural and natural attractions, from prayer wheels and mani stones to rhododendron forests teeming with wildlife. Upon reaching Namche, celebrate your journey with a hearty meal and reminisce about your trekking adventure.
Day 13
Namche Bazaar to Lukla
On your final trekking day, descend steeply to the village of Monjo and re-enter the lower Khumbu region. The familiar trail through pine forests and Sherpa villages feels different as you reflect on your incredible journey. Reach Lukla by late afternoon, where you can relax and prepare for your flight back to Kathmandu.
Day 14
Fly Lukla to Kathmandu
Take an early morning flight back to Kathmandu, bidding farewell to the majestic Himalayas. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Explore Kathmandu’s vibrant streets, shop for souvenirs, or unwind with a spa treatment.
Day 15
Departure from Kathmandu
Your adventure concludes as you transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure. Carry home memories of snow-clad peaks, serene lakes, and the warm hospitality of the Himalayas.
